The first bug, 0001 was buried in July, 2023 in Moliagul, home of the largest gold nugget ever found, the "Welcome Stranger".

 

The first gold bug ever found was 0048 in Percydale on 10 January 2024 by Grey Nomad Prospector. This bug was found less than a month after first burial.

 

There are a total of 120 standard bugs which have been buried (Victorian goldfields) plus 10 special edition bugs (in known gold areas outside of Victoria). The latest bug was buried in Jul 2024.

 

Of the 130 bugs buried, 127 have not been found yet.

 

As of February 2023 there were almost 73,000 active miner's rights in Victoria.

The concept of gold bugging was conceived in early-mid 2023. The domain name GLDBG.com was registered on 24 May, 2023 and the website developed shortly thereafter.
